Troy Atkin

Biography

Born in Hampshire, England, I graduated from the University of Law, and I qualified as a Solicitor in England & Wales in 2023 (currently non-practicing), and as a Barrister & Solicitor in Alberta, Canada, in 2025. I bring international experience and a strong litigation background to my practice, with a particular focus on high-conflict Family Law matters.

My clients are the backbone of my practice, and I do everything in my power to understand and walk in their shoes. It is my aim to ensure each client feels heard, believed, and supported throughout the process.

After moving to Canada, he successfully completed the NCA process, passing all six mandated exams within three months, and completed the CPLED Capstone in March 2025.

My practice focuses on high-conflict disputes involving decision-making responsibility and parenting time (formerly known as custody and access), as well as mobility and relocation issues. I also have extensive experience with emergency protection orders and restraining orders. Beyond complex family disputes, I handle general family litigation, including property and support matters, as well as taking on high-conflict Civil and Commercial Litigation matters.

I am a direct and results-driven litigator, often retained as a last resort for clients who have exhausted all other options and need a lawyer to achieve immediate and tangible progress. I am not afraid to litigate in Court, and I often find it is the only viable remedy for clients who have spent months, or even years, stalled in the legal process.

I have consistently achieved successful outcomes for my clients in the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta, and the Court of Justice. In the courtroom, I bring a decisive and commanding advocacy style, ensuring my clients’ positions are advanced with authority and credibility. I am unapologetically assertive because I understand that in high stakes matters, hesitation is never an option. Ultimately, my only objective is to win, and I work closely with each client to define exactly what “winning” means for them.

At the same time, I recognize that resolution is often the preferred and most cost-effective outcome for clients, and I have a successful track record in Alternative Dispute Resolution, including both Mediation and Arbitration.

I obtained an undergraduate LL.B with Honours from the University of Law in England, followed by completion of the Legal Practice Course and a master’s degree in Business Law and Management. Prior to relocating to Canada, I trained with a Tier 1 Top 40 national litigation firm and subsequently qualified into an award-winning multi-regional firm, where I developed substantial experience in high-conflict and complex litigation matters.

After moving to Canada, I completed the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) process, passing all six required examinations within a three-month period, and successfully passed the Alberta Bar Examination in March 2025.

Outside of law, I am a competitive international powerlifter. I have represented England, winning a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in New Zealand, and have earned selection for Team Canada. I have won numerous regional and national titles, both in England and Canada.

I am also a passionate legal commentator, appearing on platforms such as Thomson Reuters, Legally Speaking, Crafty Counsel, and Legal Cheek. In addition, I have worked with the National Centre for Domestic Violence, served as Chairman with Surrey Clubs for Young People, and contributed to numerous pro bono triage clinics, including the Citizens Advice Bureau.

I am a huge sports fan, and when I am not in the gym or playing sports myself, I like to use every opportunity I get to watch live sports. I support the greatest football team in the world, Liverpool FC, and I follow Rugby, Cricket, and Boxing, and enjoy days out at the show jumping, and watching WWE. I am also a big music fan, with Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, to name a few, songs you might hear from my office when I am working.
