Monica Butt

Experienced Family Lawyer

Monica joined Mincher Koeman LLP in early 2019 and practices exclusively in family law and aboriginal law.

Monica was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. She received a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Victoria with a major in Sociology, Social Justice and First Nations Women’s Issues. She received her Bachelor of Laws in 2015 at Cardiff University in Cardiff, Wales where she achieved an honours designation.

Monica completed her articles at an established family law firm in Calgary and was called to the Alberta Bar in 2017. She has appeared successfully at the Alberta Provincial Court and the Court of Queen’s Bench and has extensive litigation experience as junior counsel in complex child custody, mobility, matrimonial property, spousal support and divorce trials.

While completing law school, Monica volunteered with the Cerebra Legal Entitlement Research Project providing pro bono legal services to families with children with disabilities by challenging administrative decisions regarding the denial of care, health and educational resources by local councils. She was also awarded the Cardiff Law School Academic Merit Scholarship for International Students two years in a row.

Monica enjoys spending time hiking and skiing in the mountains and travelling the world.
